These pictures have been carved on small ivory plates inserted on the front side of a wooden
chest found during the campaign 1929-30 in grave 14 of Qustul, Nubia.
This artefact seems to be posterior to the reign of Emperor Valens. It was
belonging to a Nobat or Blemye chieftain. The chest could be of Eastern Roman or Persian origin but the drawings are framed by a
grape-frieze. |
