Charles V (1500 - 1558) for matrimonial and hereditary reasons became:
- King of Spain with all dependencies,
- Archduke of Austria with all dependencies,
- King of Germany
- Roman Emperor elected.
These titles gave him, for nearly 35 years, the supreme authority on
various countries throughout the world as it appears on the above map.
However it should be made clear that this "empire" was a personal union
and that Charles didn't assume the same kind of authority in each state
of his dominions. A Spanish subject for instance didn't have the same
rights or obligations as a Flemish or a Hungarian one. Morover the
authority on German territories and on several colonies was purely nominal.
This map is mainly romantic.
